Turtle / Peace / Double Side Pendant About 20 years ago we took a day hike up the C & O Canal near Harpers Ferry, WV. All along the banks, and on logs in the water, hundreds and hundreds of turtles basked in the warm sun. As we walked along, those turtles close to us slid smoothly into the water, an ever spreading ripple spread across the water. The undulating water blending the reflections of the trees and sky seemed to meld with the rising and falling buzz of summer insects. Fetish Bear / Peace / Double Side Pendant Many of the modern day fetish carvings are thought to have originated as carved counter weight stones on the ancient spear throwing stick, the atlatl. Before the advent of the bow and arrow the atlatl was the primary hunting weapon both in North America and Europe. Often the counter weight stones were carved in the shape of important totem animals, probably in the hope that the hunter would be imbued with the powers and insights of the animal depicted. Next the master model was cast into metal using the lost wax process. Later the master is used to make semi permanent molds which are used to cast the pieces we sell.
